In the last few months, our communities in Kiambiu and Mathare have been hit by a series of devastating fire outbreaks, leaving families displaced, livelihoods destroyed, and lives forever changed.
The facts:
3 fires in Kiambiu have affected over 70 families
2 fires in Mathare caused destruction in densely populated zones and over 80 families were affected

Causes of the fires:
Faulty or illegal electrical connections
Careless gas leaks in congested living spaces
Suspected arson, including cases tied to land conflicts and tenant evictions
Lack of title deeds and legal land tenure fuels impunity and uncertainty
Impact on Families:
Loss of life and injuries
Destruction of homes, school supplies, and businesses
Mass displacement, especially among families already living in poverty
Trauma and fear, especially among children

At Tushinde, we’ve been walking alongside affected families, offering emergency support, linking them to services, and advocating for safe housing environments in informal settlements. No family should have to choose between poverty and safety.
