Restoring hope for families

In 2023, Jane, a single mother of two living in the informal settlements, was referred to our team at Tushinde. Her family was at high risk, both children were severely malnourished, and Jane herself was struggling with poor health and a lack of family support.

Jane and her children were living in a small, single-room house without electricity, often unsure how they would afford rent or even their next meal. Her infant son, born prematurely, was suffering from severe malnutrition, while her five-year-old daughter was also undernourished and not enrolled in school. Despite these hardships, Jane remained determined, optimistic, and deeply committed to her children’s well-being.

Through Tushinde’s coordinated support, the family began receiving consistent nutritional assistance, including daily meals for the children. Both children were enrolled at our partner daycare, where they could play, enjoy porridge and lunch, and begin early learning in a safe and welcoming environment.

To strengthen the family’s stability further, our caseworkers provided bedding (a mattress and blankets), regular food packages, and closely monitored medical follow-ups and therapy for the youngest child. Jane received counselling, was supported to attend regular health check-ups, and was enrolled in a medical insurance plan.

With ongoing mentorship and encouragement, Jane gradually regained her confidence and began taking small but meaningful steps toward self-reliance. She started saving to meet her family’s basic needs, laying a stronger foundation for her children’s future.

Today, Jane’s story is one of transformation and renewed hope. Her children are healthier, happier, and socially engaged. Jane has regained her confidence as a mother and can now envision a stable, dignified future for her family.
