Today on International Widows’ Day, we stand with the United Nations in recognizing the strength, resilience, and rights of widows everywhere.
For too many women, the loss of a partner is followed by another painful struggle: fighting for inheritance, land, income, social protection, and dignity. These challenges do not affect widows alone, they affect children, families, and entire communities.
At Tushinde, we understand that protecting children also means strengthening the caregivers who hold families together. When widows are supported with rights, opportunity, and dignity, children are far more likely to grow up safe, healthy, and hopeful.
Today is a call to action to listen to widows, challenge stigma, protect their rights, and ensure access to justice, education, livelihoods, and social protection.

Navigating informal settlements means understanding the layers of risk families face every day, from poverty to displacement, child protection concerns, school disruptions, illness, and insecurity.

In Mathare and Kiambiu, Tushinde Children's Trust responds with an integrated Family Support Programme that strengthens households, protects children, and helps families move from crisis to self-reliance and stability.

Our work is not only about meeting immediate crisis needs, but also about building the conditions for children to grow up safely within their families and communities.

Every child deserves to grow up with access to clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene, not as a privilege, but as a basic right.

As we mark the Day of the African Child under the theme *"Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa,"* we are reminded that for many children living in informal settlements, this right remains out of reach.

At Tushinde, we see firsthand how limited access to WASH services affects children's health, education, dignity, and opportunities. A child worried about where to find clean water or a safe toilet cannot fully thrive.

Creating lasting change means investing in community-led solutions that make informal settlements safer and healthier for children and their families. It means working alongside communities to improve hygiene practices, strengthen sanitation systems, and advocate for equitable access to essential services.

No child should be left behind because of where they live. Together, we can build communities where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and dream in a safe and healthy environment.

Yesterday, we celebrated #InternationalDayOfPlay! 💛

For the children at our childcare centres, play is so much more than fun! It's how they learn, grow, express themselves, and build confidence. In the informal settlements where we work, safe spaces to play can be hard to come by, making these moments even more important.

From dancing and circle time to exploring sustainable toys made from recycled everyday materials, our little learners spent the day discovering, creating, and connecting. Every activity helped nurture their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development while giving them the freedom to simply be children.

This year's theme, "Protect Play, Protect Childhood," is a reminder that every child deserves a safe place to play, learn, and thrive, regardless of where they live.

As we look back on yesterday's celebration, we're proud to continue creating spaces where children can experience the joy, safety, and transformative power of play. 🌈✨

While some neighborhoods enjoy clean streets, proper waste management, and safe sanitation, others are left to bear the burden of pollution and its consequences.
As we work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we must remember the commitment to leave no one behind. Climate action, sustainable cities, good health and clean water cannot be realities for only a few while others continue to live amidst pollution and environmental neglect.
This World Environment Day, let us look beyond the headlines and acknowledge the environments that need urgent attention. Every community deserves clean air, clean water, proper waste management and the dignity of a safe and healthy place to live.

At our partner childcare centres, we implement the #Tushinde Childcare Approach curriculum, developed by our ECD Lead, Esther musyoka in collaboration with the Programmes Department and Management Team.

This curriculum creates meaningful early learning opportunities, an essential component of the Nurturing Care Framework.

Today's lesson focused on farm animals, helping children expand their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the world around them. We used old books and pasted pictures of the animals to create materials that are engaging, visual and affordable.

Through interactive, play based learning, children identified and named familiar animals they encounter in their daily lives, including hens, dogs, and cats.

By nurturing curiosity, encouraging participation and supporting key milestones in early childhood development, we are laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning and growth.
